Relief and excitement swept through Nigeria’s senior men’s football team after the Federal Government completed the long-awaited housing and land rewards tied to their Africa Cup of Nations performance.
Documentation confirming ownership of the promised assets was formally issued to the players, marking the fulfilment of incentives announced earlier this year for the national team’s continental outing.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation, certificates covering plots of land and residential properties were distributed to squad members at their training camp in Fez, Morocco, on Monday, bringing closure to months of public anticipation.
An official close to the process said the gesture reaffirmed government commitment to sports development, noting that “the players have now received tangible proof that excellence and national service will always be recognised.”
Nigeria finished as runners-up at the 2023 AFCON tournament staged in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024, narrowly losing the final 2–1 to the host nation after a strong run that reignited national pride.
Following the tournament, President Bola Tinubu hosted the team at the Presidential Villa, where each player was decorated with the Member of the Order of the Niger.
Moreover, he approved a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory and a housing unit for every squad member.
A senior federation source said the fulfilment of the pledge had boosted morale within the camp, adding that “this has lifted the players’ spirits ahead of a demanding international schedule.”
Attention has now shifted back to football matters as Nigeria prepares to open its 2025 AFCON campaign against Tanzania today.
Furthermore, the Super Eagles are scheduled to face Tunisia on December 27 before concluding the group stage against Uganda three days later.
With off-the-pitch assurances settled, expectations are high that the team will channel renewed motivation into a strong push for continental glory.
