Osimhen apologises to Nigerians over World Cup, promises AFCON win

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has apologised to Nigerians for the team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, pledging that the squad will channel the disappointment into a determined push for glory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking ahead of their match at the continental tournament, Osimhen acknowledged the deep frustration felt by fans at home and abroad, admitting that missing out on the World Cup ticket was a painful setback for both players and supporters.

“The World Cup qualification miss hurt everyone, and we know Nigerians were deeply disappointed,” Osimhen said.

“On behalf of the team, I want to say we are sorry. We did not meet expectations, and we take responsibility for that.”

Despite the setback, the Galatasaray forward insisted that the Super Eagles camp remains focused and calm, stressing that the pressure of high expectations has not unsettled the squad.

According to him, the team is united and confident in the technical direction of the coaching crew.

“There is a lot of belief in the camp,” he said. “The expectations are massive, but there is no panic. We trust the coach, we trust each other, and we know the quality we have as a team.”

Osimhen described the upcoming AFCON as a chance for redemption, noting that the tournament offers Nigeria an opportunity to reconnect with fans and restore confidence in the national team.

“This competition gives us a chance to correct our mistakes,” he said.

“It is an opportunity to show Nigerians that we can give more and that the Super Eagles still have a lot to offer.”

However, the striker was quick to caution that winning the AFCON will require grit, discipline, and consistency, given the strength of opposition across the continent.

“It will not be easy,” Osimhen said. “Every match will be a battle. We have to fight for every ball, every game, and stay focused from start to finish.”

He concluded by reaffirming the team’s ultimate ambition, making it clear that Nigeria is targeting the title rather than just a respectable outing.

“Our goal is simple,” Osimhen said. “We want to go all the way and win the AFCON. That is how we hope to make Nigerians proud again.”
