At least 10 people were killed and another 10 sustained gunshot wounds after unidentified assailants opened fire in a South African township outside Johannesburg, triggering renewed concern over rising gun violence in the country.
Police confirmed that the deadly incident occurred in Bekkersdal, a low-income settlement located southwest of Johannesburg, following reports of sporadic gunfire that sent residents fleeing for safety.
According to law enforcement officials, several victims were shot indiscriminately while moving through the streets, suggesting the attackers did not target specific individuals.
“Preliminary information indicates that the shooting was random and unprovoked,” a police spokesperson said.
Authorities disclosed that the attack took place close to a local tavern believed to be operating without proper authorisation.
Security operatives cordoned off the area shortly after the incident, while forensic teams combed the scene for evidence.
Emergency responders transported the injured victims to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Police said the identities of those killed were still being verified at the time of reporting.
Moreover, investigators noted that the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have been made so far.
“We are pursuing multiple leads and appealing to members of the public with useful information to come forward,” the police added.
The latest shooting comes barely weeks after another mass killing near Pretoria, where gunmen attacked a residential hostel, leaving 12 people dead, including a young child.
South Africa continues to grapple with persistent violent crime, with the country recording one of the highest murder rates globally. This trend has intensified calls for tougher gun control and improved community policing.
