President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned state governors against continued control of local government allocations, declaring that he may issue an Executive Order to enforce direct disbursement if compliance with the law remains elusive.
The President delivered the warning during the 15th National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where governors, party leaders, and key stakeholders were present.
Tinubu expressed displeasure that, despite a Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local government areas, several states were yet to release council funds as required.
He stressed that adherence to the ruling was non-negotiable.
According to him, prolonged defiance could leave the federal government with no alternative but to intervene decisively.
“The judgment of the Supreme Court must be implemented. If you push me to act, I will act,” the President said, signalling readiness to take unilateral action if necessary.
He further warned that patience shown by the presidency should not be misconstrued as tolerance for disobedience, noting that future federal allocation meetings could reflect tougher enforcement.
“FAAC after FAAC, the difference will be clear if this continues,” Tinubu added.
While addressing party leaders, the President also reflected on his political journey, stating that his emergence as president was guided by divine purpose rather than coincidence.
He recalled that the election period was marked by severe economic disruptions, including food shortages, fuel scarcity, and the controversial currency redesign policy, all of which placed immense pressure on Nigerians.
Tinubu lamented that many citizens struggled to meet basic needs during that period.
“There were long queues, cash shortages, and real hunger. People suffered greatly, all in the middle of an election,” he said.
Despite the challenges, the President said perseverance and faith saw him through the process.
He maintained that the experience reinforced his resolve to strengthen governance structures, including ensuring true financial autonomy for local governments across the country.
Hence, Tinubu urged governors to align with constitutional provisions and the rule of law, warning that continued resistance could force the presidency to act in the national interest.
