In a firm stance against rule-breaking, Sokoto State’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has prolonged the service tenure for at least 16 participants due to various infractions.
The announcement came during the vibrant passing-out event for the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 group, held in Sokoto on Friday.
State Coordinator Alhaji Usman Yaro highlighted the penalties, which stem from issues like unauthorised absences and repeated no-shows, underlining the program’s strict no-nonsense approach to maintaining order.
“Upholding standards is essential to the NYSC’s mission,” Yaro stated. “We impose these measures to preserve the program’s credibility and encourage full adherence to guidelines.”
He revealed that the sanctions target those who flouted protocols during their mandatory year of national service.
On a brighter note, two standout corps members were honoured with the esteemed Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for their outstanding efforts in uplifting local communities.
Yaro praised Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his ongoing support, including reliable funding for monthly stipends that ease the burdens on serving youth.
“Our gratitude extends to the Sultan of Sokoto for his steadfast encouragement,” Yaro added. “It reflects a deep commitment to fostering youth development through the NYSC.”
The coordinator explained that placements prioritise remote villages to drive local progress, syncing with the government’s focus on rural empowerment.
Many medical graduates among the corps were assigned to underserved areas, where their health initiatives have reached thousands of villagers in need.
A significant portion also served in educational institutions, bolstering teaching resources across Sokoto’s schools.
Partnerships with entities like the Bank of Industry provided valuable workshops on starting businesses and crafting viable plans.
Yaro encouraged the graduating batch to embody NYSC values in their future endeavours and apply the entrepreneurial training from the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative.
This event underscores the NYSC’s dual role in discipline enforcement and community impact in Sokoto State.
As Nigeria’s youth service program evolves, such ceremonies highlight both challenges and successes in national integration.
