State governors have raised a nationwide security alert ahead of the 2025 festive season, citing increased population movement, large public gatherings and heightened public safety risks across the country.
The alert was issued at the latest meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) after a briefing from the Office of the National Security Adviser, which urged states to scale up preparedness in anticipation of Christmas and New Year activities.
According to the Forum, governors resolved to strengthen interagency coordination among security and emergency response agencies, while also increasing visible security presence in identified hotspots to deter criminal activity.
The NGF said special attention would be given to the protection of critical infrastructure, transport corridors, recreational centres and other high-traffic locations expected to witness heavy patronage during the festive period.
Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said proactive security measures were necessary to ensure a peaceful celebration nationwide.
He said states would work closely with federal security agencies to prevent breaches and respond swiftly to threats.
Moreover, governors assured residents that early-warning mechanisms and intelligence-sharing frameworks would be activated to mitigate risks associated with crowd control and cross-border movements.
Hence, the Forum urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that collective responsibility would be vital to maintaining safety throughout the festive season.
