We will pray against insecurity rather than protest – Sokoto NLC

Must read

In a surprising shift, the Sokoto State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has chosen spiritual appeals over public demonstrations to combat rising threats in the region.

This move comes amid growing concerns about bandit attacks and abductions plaguing northern Nigeria.

NLC leader Abdullahi Jungle revealed the plan during a midweek briefing, highlighting a focus on unity and faith.

“We’ve decided to turn to divine guidance to restore calm, rather than taking to the streets,” Jungle stated, emphasizing the group’s new strategy.

The union had initially geared up for a countrywide rally against violence, mirroring calls from national labor bodies.

Yet, after internal discussions, they pivoted to organize communal supplications for safety.

Sokoto has faced relentless assaults in districts like Sabon Birni and Isa, where residents endure frequent raids.

Similar chaos grips Rabah, Tangaza, and Gada, forcing many to flee homes and abandon livelihoods.

Nearby Zamfara continues to suffer some of the most severe banditry outbreaks.

Jungle pointed out the profound impact on daily life in these zones.

“The dangers here hit harder than anywhere else, crippling farms and markets,” he remarked.

Despite praising recent security gains, the chairman urged for stronger action.

“Our forces deserve credit for their bravery, but we need more resources to turn the tide,” Jungle added.

Aligning with local customs, the NLC teamed up with community groups for these prayer events.

“In times of trouble, Sokoto’s people have always sought solace through faith,” he explained.

Prominent religious figures led the gatherings, drawing widespread participation.

Jungle pressed the central government to bolster defenses without hesitation.

“Authorities must equip our protectors fully to end this cycle of loss,” he urged.

This approach, he clarified, strengthens their push for change without confrontation.

“It’s a thoughtful way to demand better security while honoring our heritage,” Jungle noted.

The inaugural session unfolded at the union’s headquarters, uniting workers, elders, and locals in hope.
