Police authorities in Lagos have taken into custody popular social media personality Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following an attempted suicide and a risky driving stunt broadcast live online that culminated in a serious road accident.
Police said the incident stemmed from a livestream in which the influencer was seen operating a vehicle at excessive speed, conduct officers described as reckless and potentially fatal to both the driver and other road users.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the episode occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and quickly drew the attention of law enforcement after the footage circulated widely across social media platforms.
Confirming the development, police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi noted that the suspect’s actions went beyond entertainment and crossed into a public safety threat.
She said investigators considered the behaviour “deliberately dangerous” and capable of causing loss of life.
“What we observed was not content creation but a clear disregard for traffic laws and human safety,” Adebisi stated. “Such conduct creates avoidable danger on already busy roads.”
Furthermore, the Command disclosed that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, which has commenced a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police sources indicated that once investigations are concluded, findings will be communicated to the public, after which the suspect is expected to face prosecution in line with existing traffic and criminal laws.
Meanwhile, Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, used the incident to issue a broader warning to online personalities and motorists across the state.
Jimoh cautioned that social media should not be used as a platform to glorify unlawful behaviour, stressing that digital influence does not confer immunity from the law.
“Anyone who promotes or engages in dangerous acts, whether online or offline, will be held accountable,” he warned.
He further urged drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, adding that the Command remains resolute in protecting lives and maintaining order on Lagos roads.
The arrest has reignited public debate over the growing trend of risky online stunts, particularly among influencers seeking viral attention, and the responsibility that comes with a large digital following.
