I featured Omah Lay because he thought I hated him — Davido

Must read

Grammy‑nominated Nigerian singer, Davido has explained reason he collaborated with fellow artiste Omah Lay on the song ‘With You’.

Davido said the idea for the track emerged after Omah Lay believed he disliked him. According to the singer, the misunderstanding began when he played one of Omah Lay’s songs during a livestream with American streamer Kai Cenat in Lagos.

The next day, Omah Lay tweeted that he thought Davido “hated” him. Davido responded with a direct message asking why he would think that, noting they had never met.

“How Omah Lay and I got together was, Kai Cenat came to Nigeria and I was driving him to the club, and then Omah Lay’s song comes up, and he was like, ‘Who is this?’ I responded, ‘Oh! This is Omah Lay, he is hot.’ And then the next day, Omah Lay tweeted like, ‘Wow! Davido gave me a shoutout on a livestream, I thought he hated me.’ And I DMed him, ‘Why would you think I hate you? We’ve never met,’” Davido said.

The exchange led to the two artistes exchanging numbers and working on music together. They recorded several songs, and ‘With You’ was chosen as the one to release. The song appears on Davido’s fifth studio album, 5ive, released in April.

‘With You’ has been one of the most successful Nigerian songs of the year. It topped the TurnTable Top 100 chart and reached high positions on several international charts. Spotify also named it the most shared Nigerian song of 2025.

The track has been nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards, highlighting its critical and commercial impact.

Highlife legend Bright Chimezie praised the song for creatively referencing his classic work, saying he enjoyed how it honored his influence.
