In a shocking outbreak of violence, armed assailants struck a bustling mining operation in Plateau State’s Barkin Ladi region, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals.
The assault unfolded in the middle of the night on Tuesday evening, catching workers off guard as they toiled at the site. Local authorities are scrambling to account for several missing persons amid the chaos.
Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the sudden raid in the Ratoso Fan area. Survivors described how the intruders burst in and unleashed a barrage of gunfire, forcing many to scatter into the night for safety.
This incident has intensified fears over ongoing threats in Nigeria’s volatile North-Central zone.
Dagallang Davott, leader of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation and mining oversight secretary in Barkin Ladi, decried the brutality in a statement.
“This senseless bloodshed at the Fan mining spot last night has shattered our community,” Davott told reporters in Jos. “We’ve lost 12 lives so far, with more unaccounted for due to the nighttime panic.”
Community member Moses Daniel, a lifelong resident of Ratoso Fan, shared his heartbreak over the tragedy.
“It’s devastating, 12 of our own gunned down right here in my hometown during their daily work,” Daniel said. He urged swift action, noting that alerts have already reached the Nigerian Army’s 3rd Division.
Army spokesperson Aliyu Danja acknowledged the report and promised a prompt investigation.
“We’re verifying the details and will provide updates soon,” Danja responded. Efforts to reach other officials for comment were ongoing as of Wednesday.
This attack adds to a troubling pattern of unrest plaguing Plateau State, underscoring the urgent call for stronger protections.
Rural areas, especially mining hubs, have become hotspots for militia activities, endangering lives and livelihoods. Residents are demanding more patrols to curb the escalating dangers.
