Benue orders political appointees eyeing 2027 polls to resign

Must read

The Benue State Government has directed all political appointees harbouring ambitions to contest elective positions in 2027 to formally declare their intentions and relinquish their appointments.

Deputy Governor Barr. Dr. Sam Ode, who endorsed the directive, has called on affected officials to comply immediately as political activities intensify across the state ahead of the general elections.

AFRIPOST reports that under the new order, all appointees nursing political ambitions must submit written declarations specifying the offices they intend to contest, alongside their resignation letters, to the Office of the Deputy Governor.

The administration has set Thursday, December 18, 2025, as the deadline for compliance.

The statement noted that all submissions would be forwarded to Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormen Alia for review and further action as deemed necessary.

Government sources explained that the measure is aimed at ensuring discipline, transparency, and continued focus within the administration as it works to deliver on its policy and development agenda.

The directive comes against the backdrop of mounting political manoeuvres and growing indications of interest for various elective offices as parties and potential candidates position themselves for the 2027 electoral contest.
