Suspected gunmen dressed in military attire have killed a serving soldier and abducted 13 passengers during a coordinated attack on two commercial vehicles along the Okene–Auchi Federal Highway.
According to sources, the first incident occurred around 5:35 p.m. on December 16, when a green Toyota Sienna travelling from Abuja to Delta State was intercepted. Six passengers were forcibly taken, while three others narrowly escaped.
“The attackers appeared well-coordinated and targeted both vehicles simultaneously,” a witness said. “It was terrifying to see them approach with such precision.”
In the same operation, a white Toyota Hiace carrying 11 passengers from Delta State to Abuja was also stopped. Seven passengers were abducted, and four managed to escape unharmed.
Tragically, a Non-Commissioned Officer of the Nigerian Army, who identified himself to the attackers, was shot during the assault.
“He suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and thighs and later succumbed to his injuries,” a source confirmed.
Both vehicles have since been recovered and secured at a local police station.
Police authorities also retrieved five empty 7.62mm cartridges, believed to be from an AK-47 rifle, at the scene.
The soldier’s body was transferred to Okengwe General Hospital mortuary for autopsy, while statements from the rescued passengers are being collected to support ongoing investigations.
Security forces have launched an extensive operation along the corridor, including bush combing and heightened surveillance, in a bid to rescue the abducted passengers and apprehend the attackers.
Officials assured motorists that measures are being strengthened to safeguard the Okene–Auchi highway and prevent future attacks.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of commuters along this corridor,” a police spokesperson said.
