Ahmed Musa retires from Super Eagles after storied career

Must read

Ahmed Musa has formally ended his international journey with Nigeria’s Super Eagles, drawing the curtain on a career that spanned nearly 15 years and delivered some of the national team’s most memorable moments.

The former national team captain confirmed his decision on Wednesday, describing his time in Nigeria’s colours as a rare honour and a deeply personal chapter of his football life.

“Representing Nigeria was never just football for me; it was identity, responsibility, and pride,” Musa said.

“After careful reflection, I believe the time has come to step aside and allow the next generation to carry the flag forward.”

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential attackers of his era, Musa was part of the Super Eagles squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2013, a triumph that cemented his place in the country’s football history.

Beyond continental success, the winger carved out a unique legacy on the global stage. He remains Nigeria’s most prolific scorer at the FIFA World Cup, with four goals, including a famous brace against Argentina at Brazil 2014 and another double against Iceland at the Russia 2018 tournament.

Reflecting on his journey, Musa paid tribute to those who shaped his international career. “I am grateful to every coach, teammate, and staff member who trusted me,” he said.

“Most importantly, I thank Nigerians everywhere. Your support, whether in stadiums or from home, carried me through the highs and the lows.”

Musa’s football story began with Kano Pillars before he moved to Europe, where he featured for CSKA Moscow, VVV-Venlo, and later clubs in Turkey. He also enjoyed a successful spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, contributing to a league title triumph.

In September 2024, the 33-year-old returned to Kano Pillars, first as a player and subsequently as the club’s general manager, marking a homecoming that blended experience with leadership.

His international retirement follows closely on the exit of defender William Troost-Ekong from the national team, signalling a period of transition for the Super Eagles.

Musa’s final involvement with the national side came during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was part of the squad that reached the final but did not feature on the pitch.

“As I leave the Super Eagles, I do so with peace and gratitude,” Musa said. “I gave everything I had. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

His departure closes a significant chapter in Nigerian football, leaving behind a standard of commitment and performance that future generations will be measured against.
