The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has raised alarms over what he describes as deliberate efforts by the Nigerian government to undermine the country’s democratic system.
Speaking in an interview on Arise Television, Tanko urged global stakeholders to intervene, warning that Nigeria’s position as the most populous Black nation means any democratic crisis could have far-reaching effects across the continent.
“The Nigerian government is deliberately eroding democracy,” Tanko said. “The international community must step in to address this.
“Nigeria is the largest Black nation in the world, and if its democratic foundations collapse, others will inevitably suffer.”
He further criticised current leadership, suggesting that officials continue to repeat mistakes of the past that weaken governance.
“Those in power now seem to ignore lessons history has taught us.
“Democracy remains the best form of government we have, yet the processes we’re witnessing make it appear corrupt and unacceptable,” he added.
On a separate matter, Tanko addressed speculation surrounding former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent meeting with ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.
Contrary to rumours of a political alliance, Tanko told Punch that the discussion focused on national issues rather than electoral ambitions.
“The meetings between Obi and Jonathan have been ongoing for years, long before any public interest arose,” Tanko explained.
“This is about the country, not politics. Both are committed to Nigeria’s welfare and have maintained a discreet dialogue. People only speculated when talk of Jonathan entering the political fray resurfaced.”
Tanko emphasised the shared vision between the two leaders.
“Jonathan is a statesman, and Obi is emerging as one. Their collaboration is rooted in the nation’s interest, not personal gain. What matters now is how we can collectively safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.”
The Obidient Movement’s coordinator concluded by reiterating that the global community has a critical role to play in supporting democratic integrity in Nigeria.
