Nigeria’s legal community has been thrown into grief following the death of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, after a prolonged illness.
Reports indicate that the retired head of the judiciary passed away on Tuesday while undergoing medical treatment outside the country, bringing an end to decades of judicial service marked by discipline and restraint.
A close source familiar with the development confirmed the passing, explaining that Justice Muhammad died in a hospital in Saudi Arabia after battling health challenges for several months.
According to the source, his condition had required sustained specialist care abroad.
Moreover, tributes have continued to pour in from across the legal profession and faith-based organisations.
The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS), National Headquarters, formally acknowledged the loss in a condolence message issued on December 16, 2025.
Describing his death as a significant setback, the association said Justice Muhammad’s passing had left a deep void within the judiciary and the wider legal community.
“Nigeria has lost a jurist who carried the burden of justice with humility and conscience,” the statement said.
Furthermore, NAMLAS highlighted his influence beyond the courtroom, noting that he played a quiet but impactful role in nurturing young legal minds.
“To many aspiring lawyers, he represented stability, guidance, and moral clarity at a time when the Bench needed it most,” the group added.
Justice Muhammad rose through the ranks of the Nigerian judiciary over several decades, earning a reputation for firm adherence to due process and judicial independence.
His career culminated in his appointment as Chief Justice of Nigeria, the highest judicial office in the country.
However, persistent health concerns eventually forced him to step aside. In June 2022, he resigned from office, citing medical reasons, a decision that was widely viewed as an act of institutional responsibility.
As condolences continue nationwide, legal practitioners have described his legacy as one defined by service, mentorship, and commitment to the rule of law. Funeral arrangements are yet to be formally announced by the family.
