EFCC arrests former Anambra governor, Ngige

Must read

A fresh wave of uncertainty swept through political circles on Wednesday night after confirmation emerged that former Labour Minister and ex-Anambra State governor, Dr Chris Ngige, is currently being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The development triggered intense public interest, especially after earlier rumours suggested he may have been abducted by unidentified armed men.

Moreover, the clarification came through a statement issued by Ngige’s former media aide, Fred Chukwulobe, who urged the public to disregard claims of a kidnapping.

Chukwulobe noted that the former minister willingly met with EFCC investigators, describing the reports of abduction as “misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic”.

He explained that Ngige’s presence with the anti-graft agency was official, insisting that the situation should not be misinterpreted.

“Dr Ngige is with EFCC officials, and there is no cause for alarm,” Chukwulobe said, adding that further information would be made available when necessary.

Ngige has remained a notable figure in national discourse in recent weeks.

Moreover, he was in the news recently after gunmen attacked his convoy in Anambra State, a frightening episode that reignited concerns over political violence in the region.

However, he escaped harm as he was not inside the vehicle at the time.

The EFCC has not yet disclosed the basis of its invitation or detention, but analysts believe the agency may be probing issues linked to his tenure in public office.

A security expert in Abuja, Musa Olagoke, said the development suggests “the agency is revisiting cases involving high-profile political actors, especially those who wielded significant influence in previous administrations”.

As the situation unfolds, observers expect the anti-graft agency to provide a clearer explanation. The case is likely to dominate political discussions in the coming days, especially within Anambra’s already charged landscape.
