An early-morning explosion along the Gurusu–Gwashi corridor in Zamfara State has intensified fears over rising insecurity, after an Improvised Explosive Device detonated beneath a commercial vehicle and left several passengers injured.
The blast, which occurred on a route frequently used by villagers and traders, once again underscores the growing boldness of armed groups operating in the area.
Witnesses described a sudden, deafening sound that threw the Toyota Eagle Eye vehicle off balance, sending nearby commuters scrambling for safety.
A resident who arrived shortly after the incident told correspondents that, “People were terrified. You could see shock on every face because no one expected an IED attack on that stretch of road.”
Security operatives immediately launched a coordinated response. Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA moved into the scene, backed by tactical units and bomb disposal technicians working to secure the route and prevent additional threats.
Investigators also began collecting fragments of the device for forensic analysis.
The explosion, which occurred shortly after 8 a.m., has drawn the attention of military intelligence teams.
Security operatives believe the attack was masterminded by a known bandit commander, Sadiku, reportedly working with the notorious Dogo Gide network that has carried out violent operations across Zamfara and neighbouring states.
A senior military source familiar with the probe said, “This blast bears the signature of groups that have been trying to expand their influence. It was a calculated strike meant to intimidate road users and exert control.”
Meanwhile, security agencies have urged travellers to remain vigilant, warning that armed elements may attempt further disruptions along rural roads.
Authorities advised commuters to promptly report strange movements or abandoned objects, stressing that early warnings can save lives.
As investigations continue, the incident adds to the security challenges confronting communities in Bukkuyum LGA, where fear and uncertainty now shadow daily travel.
