The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, back into custody after he reportedly failed to satisfy the bail conditions set by the anti-graft agency.
The detention comes amid ongoing investigations into multiple allegations, including money laundering and terrorism financing.
An EFCC insider confirmed that Malami would remain in the commission’s custody, noting that the former minister had not complied with specific requirements attached to his bail.
“He was initially granted bail, but he failed to meet the stipulated conditions. He will remain in our custody until the conditions are fulfilled,” the source said.
AFRIPOST reports that EFCC are probing the former minister over the management of suspicious accounts, as well as the recovery and whereabouts of funds linked to the late General Sani Abacha stashed in Switzerland and Jersey in the UK.
“The offences under investigation include money laundering, abuse of office, and terrorism financing. The exact amounts involved are still being determined as the investigation unfolds,” the source added.
During his detention, the EFCC has required Malami to report daily for questioning throughout December, signaling the seriousness of the probe. The commission indicated that 18 separate charges are currently being examined.
In response, Malami has denied all allegations, describing them as “fabricated.” He emphasized that his record as Attorney General of the Federation contradicts any claims of involvement in terrorism financing.
“Throughout my tenure, I collaborated with relevant institutions to strengthen Nigeria’s legal and institutional safeguards against money laundering and terrorism financing,” he said.
