The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has asserted that Nigeria’s escalating insecurity could be brought under control within six months if the Federal Government authorizes the establishment of state police.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Adams highlighted growing consensus across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones on the urgent need for state-controlled policing.
He emphasized that the remaining step is legislative approval from the National Assembly and assent from the president.
“For the first time, all six geopolitical zones support the idea of state police. Even our Northern brothers, the governors and Emirs, are in agreement,” Adams said.
“If the National Assembly legislates on this and the president signs it into law, I am confident that insecurity in the country will be resolved within six months.”
Adams also acknowledged the role of Amotekun, the regional security outfit in the South-West, but noted that its current resources and weaponry are insufficient to combat sophisticated terrorist threats effectively.
The push for state police has recently gained momentum, with Southern governors reaffirming that its creation is essential for genuine federalism and robust grassroots security.
According to Adams, the move represents a critical step in decentralizing security and empowering states to respond to local threats more efficiently.
AFRIPOST reports that beyond legislation, the success of state police will depend on adequate training, funding, and coordination with existing federal security agencies to ensure rapid and strategic responses to emerging threats.
