PDP chairman dumps party, joins APC in Zamfara

Must read

A fresh wave of political realignment has hit Zamfara as a prominent Peoples Democratic Party figure, Sadiq Abubakar, officially cut ties with the opposition and pledged allegiance to the All Progressives Congress.

His announcement has triggered renewed debates about the future of the PDP in the state and the widening influence of the ruling party.

The former PDP boss claimed his former party had lost its relevance in Zamfara and struggled nationally due to unresolved internal conflicts, which he described as “structural cracks too deep to repair”.

He argued that political actors searching for stability now see the APC as a viable destination.

Abubakar made his decision public after arriving at the APC Secretariat in Kaura Namoda, where he was received by senior party figures, including ex-state chairman Lawal Liman and Kaura Namoda APC leader Alhaji Sule Gabake.

In a statement issued by APC Publicity Secretary Yusuf Idris, the party celebrated the defection, stating it underscores growing public confidence in the APC-led leadership in Zamfara.

According to him, “More stakeholders are realising that APC represents a more unified and developmental platform.”

Liman told party supporters that Abubakar and his followers would be integrated without discrimination, adding that the leadership of Senator AbdulAziz Yari and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle “has repositioned the party for inclusive growth and political stability”.

Speaking after receiving his APC membership card, Abubakar explained that his move was motivated by what he called “the need to belong to a party that still listens to its people”.

He added that his decision marked the beginning of “a stronger political partnership for Kaura Namoda”.

Moreover, political observers suggest the defection could spark further movement from rival camps as Zamfara’s political landscape shifts ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The changing alliances hint at deeper issues within opposition ranks, potentially reshaping the state’s party dominance narrative.

The turn of events continues to stir reactions across the state as residents, analysts, and political actors assess how this realignment may influence grassroots mobilisation, policy direction, and future political contests.
