Ogun State Government has issued a stern warning to residents, declaring that anyone caught dumping refuse in unauthorised areas risks imprisonment or hefty fines.
Authorities emphasised that indiscriminate waste disposal is not only illegal but a direct threat to public health and environmental safety.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Waste Management, Hon. Abayomi Hunye, said, “The practice of dumping refuse in streets, drainages, and other unapproved locations must stop. Violators will face the full force of the law.”
He stressed that proper disposal facilities exist in all approved markets, yet many continue to flout regulations.
The directive, released on Monday, specifically cites the Ogun State Waste Management Authority Law of 2020. Section 34(1) of the legislation stipulates that offenders shall pay a minimum fine of N25,000, while persistent violators risk a maximum fine of N2 million, three months imprisonment, or both.
Hunye added, “The government can no longer tolerate the pernicious practice of indiscriminate dumping.
“We are committed to enforcing the law to ensure public health and environmental protection are not compromised.”
The state government has urged all residents to utilise designated refuse containers and respect the waste management regulations. Authorities warned that failure to comply will result in immediate legal action.
