Must read

A medical director of Ayodele Hospital in Ilorin, Kwara State, Dr Ayodele Joseph, has been remanded at a correctional facility by an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping a patient. The alleged victim, a nurse, had reportedly visited the hospital for medical treatment when she was sedated and sexually assaulted by the suspect without her consent.

Police investigations led to the recovery of a video recording of the assault, which was confirmed by medical tests. The suspect, who claimed to have 27 years of experience in the medical field, was charged with rape based on the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the police.

During the hearing, prosecutor Gbenga Ayeni argued that the offence was grave, and he submitted a motion ex parte seeking the remand of Dr Ayodele in a correctional centre. In response, Magistrate Jumoke Kamson granted the prosecutor’s prayer and ordered that the suspect be remanded in custody.

The case has been adjourned to May 18, 2023, and it has generated widespread public outcry, with many calling for justice for the victim. This unfortunate incident once again highlights the need for medical practitioners to adhere strictly to professional ethics and conduct themselves with utmost professionalism in the course of their duties.

The alleged rape of a nurse patient by a medical director is a disturbing and condemnable act that must not be swept under the carpet. The court’s decision to remand the suspect in custody sends a strong message that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and justice will be served. It is hoped that this case will serve as a deterrent to others who may be inclined to commit such heinous crimes
