Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has disclosed that his government poured roughly N100 billion into security operations this year as part of broader efforts to stabilise communities affected by persistent insurgent threats.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the Emir of Uba, Alhaji Ali Ibn Mamza, the governor said the financial commitment was necessary to safeguard residents, protect farmlands and ultimately restore normal life across the state.
He described security as “the backbone of development”, noting that without it, infrastructure and investment would remain impossible.
Zulum, who travelled to Uba after deadly attacks that recently claimed multiple lives, explained that the visit provided an opportunity to personally review the situation and engage community leaders.
According to him, restoring peace in Askira/Uba axis remains a top priority. “The challenges here are deeply felt, and addressing them requires practical solutions not just promises,” the governor was quoted.
He expressed relief over the successful rescue of 12 abducted female farmers, commending the joint efforts of security agencies and local vigilantes.
He said the incident further highlighted the need for continuous support to security operatives.
The governor lamented that persistent violence has discouraged contractors, delaying critical road projects and slowing planned infrastructure expansion.
However, he revealed that proactive measures are underway to tackle this problem, including the establishment of a quarry site in Gwoza and acquiring 100 trucks to empower the state’s Road Maintenance Agency to execute projects internally.
Zulum also reaffirmed plans for extensive development in education and healthcare. He announced that a tertiary institution, a computer institute, a JAMB centre, a hospital and major roads are already in the blueprint for Uba and surrounding communities.
“We cannot allow instability to rob our people of opportunity. These projects are designed to change lives,” he added.
Responding, the Emir of Uba praised the governor’s interventions, describing them as “remarkable investments that have reshaped Borno’s future.”
The monarch appreciated Zulum for visiting during what he described as a difficult moment for the community.
“Your projects speak for you. The people recognise your efforts and pray for strength to continue this work,” the Emir said.
The state government believes the combined strategy of security funding, infrastructure rollout and community engagement will gradually restore confidence and drive long-term socioeconomic transformation in the region.
