Zamfara govt unveils record N861bn 2026 budget

Must read

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has presented a proposed N861 billion spending plan for 2026, describing it as an ambitious blueprint aimed at rebuilding the state’s economy and strengthening essential public services.

The governor briefed the Zamfara State House of Assembly in Gusau, stressing that the proposal signals what he called a “decisive shift toward long-term development and accountability in public finance.”

According to the figures shared, capital projects dominate the financial layout, with N714 billion, representing 83 per cent, earmarked for infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, security, and social protection.

The remaining N147 billion, or 17 per cent, is set aside for recurrent commitments such as salaries and administrative costs.

A breakdown of sectoral allocations shows education slated for N65 billion, health sector initiatives for N87 billion, agriculture for N86 billion, public safety for N45 billion, environmental protection for N22 billion, and another N17 billion dedicated to welfare and social safety programmes.

Governor Lawal said his administration intends to ensure the budget directly supports communities that have long lacked investment.

“We are prioritising capital spending because Zamfara cannot progress without rebuilding the systems our people rely on,” he said during the presentation.

He emphasised that the budget was developed to reflect efficient spending practices and align with global public finance standards.

“Our recurrent bill staying at 17 per cent is proof that we are operating responsibly and protecting future growth,” the governor added.

Speaking further, Lawal noted that the objective of the financial proposal stretches beyond numbers on a document.

“This is a commitment to stability, renewed confidence, and the prosperity Zamfara people deserve.”

AFRIPOST reports that the unprecedented capital vote could signal wider economic activity if efficiently implemented, especially across rural communities affected by insecurity and agricultural decline.
