Police deny kidnapping of 14 travellers in Imo

Must read

Imo police authorities have dismissed a viral social media clip alleging that 14 travellers were abducted near Umuowa–Ihitte Junction in Ngor Okpala, describing the footage as an outdated incident misrepresented to stir fear.

Police officials explained that the video, which resurfaced on December 1, portrayed an event that happened months ago during an earlier security breach along the Owerri–Aba route.

Furthermore, investigators traced its circulation and confirmed it had no link to any recent kidnapping.

A senior police source said significant efforts were made at the time to secure the affected passengers.

“People should not allow recycled content to dictate their emotions,” the officer said, stressing how such misinformation fuels needless anxiety.

Imo Police Command spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, clarified the situation in a statement issued Tuesday night in Owerri.

He noted that Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma has urged residents to ignore the misleading clip and avoid spreading unverified claims that could heighten tension.

Moreover, the CP has ordered increased patrols along major corridors, working closely with other security formations and community-based outfits.

The move aims to strengthen safety for travellers, especially as holiday movements intensify.

Henry appealed to residents to stay composed and alert.

“Caution and timely reporting help us respond faster,” he added, encouraging the public to immediately notify nearby police units about any suspicious behaviour.

The episode highlights how quickly misinformation can escalate into fear, particularly in a season when travel activity is high and security concerns are already sensitive.
