DStv faces risk of subscriber exodus as Warner Bros deal stalls

Must read

DStv is facing the possibility of losing more subscribers following a deadlock in negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) over a new distribution agreement.

The pay-TV operator informed customers via text message that its current carriage deal with WBD will expire on December 31, 2025.

Talks to renew the agreement are ongoing but have yet to produce a resolution.

“While discussions between the parties continue, no agreement has been reached at this stage. If this remains unchanged, several Warner Bros. Discovery channels may no longer be available on DStv from 1 January 2026,” MultiChoice said.

Should the deal collapse, DStv viewers will lose access to major WBD channels, including CNN, Discovery Channel, TLC, and Cartoon Network, starting January 1, 2026.

The development comes as MultiChoice struggles with declining subscriber numbers, following its recent acquisition by Canal+.

The broadcaster has lost 2.8 million active linear subscribers over the past two financial years, including 1.2 million in 2025 alone, representing an 8 percent decline across South Africa and other African markets.

In Nigeria, MultiChoice has recorded a loss of 1.4 million subscribers in two years, attributed largely to repeated increases in subscription fees.
