Ondo State has reactivated the long-dormant Justice of the Peace system, signalling a renewed push to strengthen community justice after nearly two decades of inactivity.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, alongside the Attorney General, Dr Kayode Ajulo, and the Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, presided over the formal induction of 130 new JPs in Akure.
The inductees were selected from various professional and community backgrounds, reflecting the administration’s wider plan to deepen grassroots dispute resolution.
Speaking at the ceremony, the governor described the initiative as a major step in advancing the administration’s focus on order, security and the rule of law across local communities.
He also announced that he had approved the recruitment and training of 500 additional Amotekun officers to further enhance the state’s security framework.
Aiyedatiwa charged the new JPs to uphold their duties with integrity and fairness, noting their crucial role in maintaining peace, mediating conflicts and supporting orderly community life.
Dr Ajulo and Justice Odusola outlined the legal responsibilities of the office, while representatives of the new appointees pledged their commitment to grassroots peacebuilding and the state’s broader justice reforms.
