The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Northern Region and the FCT, Rev. John Hayab, has revealed that one of the parents of the abducted schoolchildren in Niger State has died from a heart attack.
Rev. Hayab disclosed this on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels TV.
He said the deceased parent, identified as Mr. Anthony, had three children among those abducted.
Recall that over 200 pupils of a Catholic private school were seized by bandits, with 50 later escaping and reuniting with their families.
“One of the parents of the abducted children from the school died yesterday. Mr Anthony died of a heart-attack following the abduction of his 3 children,” he said.
He lamented that many parents were traumatised but afraid to speak publicly about their ordeal.
Hayab said he had spoken with church leaders who also expressed concern over the families’ emotional state.
“You can imagine, the man was in shock because three children he would not even explain what’s happening to them,” he added.
The cleric described the horrific conditions the abducted pupils were likely facing, noting that they were deprived of basic care and exposed to extreme hardship.
“Now the parents themselves cannot tell exactly where they are and what happens to them. I think there’s a mix-up of information even in some of these conversations,” he said.
