The Lagos State Police Command has stopped an Egungun festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the Oregun area.
Police also detained individuals connected to posters and online messages warning residents to limit their movements during the festival.
In a statement on Wednesday, the police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the suspects, acting under the group name “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” were arrested after distributing flyers that restricted people’s movement, expression, and dignity.
The command described the actions as capable of causing public fear and disrupting order.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has therefore ordered an immediate suspension of the festival scheduled for November 27 and 28, 2025.
“He warned that the command would not tolerate any activity capable of breaching public peace, threatening safety, or disrupting law and order in the state,” the statement read.
The police added that cultural events or gatherings that could escalate tensions or put lives at risk would not be allowed in Lagos.
“In a similar incident on November 23, 2025, at Mafoluku in Oshodi under Makinde Division, the police swiftly arrested 12 individuals behind another attempt to incite disorder through circulation of provocative publications.
“All suspects remain under investigation and will be charged upon conclusion of inquiries,” the statement added.
CP Jimoh reiterated the ban, telling the Oje Parapo group to abandon any plans to go ahead with the festival, noting that the event could not be secured. He criticized the fear already created among residents and warned that anyone trying to disturb public peace would face legal consequences.
The command assured Lagos residents that they could continue their daily activities safely, promising continued protection of lives and property.
