Concerns as police beef up security in Lagos schools, worship centres

Must read

Lagos residents are witnessing heightened police visibility across schools, places of worship, and key public areas as the state ramps up security measures ahead of the festive season.

Authorities said the initiative is aimed at preventing potential threats and reassuring the public amid rising national security concerns.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh, speaking during a press briefing at the Ikeja command headquarters, emphasised that the increased presence of officers is a proactive measure to maintain safety.

“Our goal is to ensure everyone in Lagos feels secure. We have deployed additional personnel to schools, worship centres, and other high-traffic locations, and this effort will continue into the New Year,” he said.

The move comes as recent kidnappings in states like Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger have stirred anxiety nationwide. Jimoh reassured residents that Lagos remains safe but urged vigilance.

“There is no cause for alarm. Our teams are strategically positioned across all local government areas to respond swiftly to any incidents,” he added.

Furthermore, the CP also highlighted an alarming rise in vehicle theft, often involving newly hired drivers or car wash attendants.

“We’ve recovered ten high-end vehicles and arrested 56 suspects connected to robberies and thefts.

“Many of these cars were misappropriated shortly after being handed to new employees,” he explained.

Among the recovered vehicles were a Toyota Hilux, Range Rover SUV, Land Cruiser, and Lexus GX460, alongside a motorcycle reportedly used in a robbery attempt.

Police also seized weapons including homemade pistols, a modified shotgun, machetes, and cartridges during recent operations.

Jimoh advised residents to adopt stricter personal security measures. “Always be cautious with your keys and property, especially when dealing with new employees or service providers,” he said.

He further reiterated the command’s commitment to sustained crime-fighting efforts, assuring that Lagos will remain “safe and secure” throughout the festive period and beyond.

This security reinforcement shows a broader strategy to maintain public confidence while mitigating emerging threats in the state.
