Prosecution pushes for death sentence as Court sets 4pm for Kanu’s sentencing

Must read

The prosecution in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to impose the death penalty, insisting that the gravity of the offences for which he was convicted warrants the maximum punishment.

Lead prosecution counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), told the court on Thursday that more than 75 security operatives had been killed in attacks linked to Kanu.

According to him, his group and followers have killed and destroyed many innocent Nigerians and property.

Awomolo argued that subjecting the defendant to the harshest punishment allowable under the law would amount to justice for all those affected by what he described as acts of terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho, who earlier convicted Kanu on three counts, stood down the matter until a few minutes before 4pm to deliver his sentencing decision.

Security around the court premises tightened as the proceedings progressed, with journalists and lawyers awaiting the judge’s return.

The court is expected to give its final ruling later today.
