PDP Wike faction expels gov Makinde, Mohammed others from party

Must read

In a sweeping decision that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s political landscape, the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has expelled several high-profile leaders, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State.

The move also included the dissolution of PDP state executives in six states, signalling a decisive crackdown on perceived anti-party activities.

The action was announced following the 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, which convened to address growing factionalism and recent violations of court directives within the party.

“The era of indiscipline is over,” said Acting National Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman. “The PDP will not tolerate actions that undermine our unity or put the party in disrepute.”

According to a communique read by National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the NEC expressed serious concern over members who defied court orders by organising and attending unauthorised conventions.

These acts, the statement noted, “triggered confusion, factionalisation, and the defection of governors and legislators nationwide.”

The disciplinary measures target a broad list of influential figures. Alongside the expelled governors, former Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Senator Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja, and several others were cited for actions described as anti-party and detrimental to the PDP’s reputation.

Furthermore, the NEC also instructed Chief Ali Odefa to refund all salaries and allowances collected after his earlier expulsion.

Moreover, the party has simultaneously dissolved state executives in Oyo, Bauchi, Zamfara, Ekiti, Edo, and Lagos, mandating caretaker committees to organise fresh congresses.

The NEC ratified the appointment of Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck as Acting National Vice Chairman (South East) and confirmed Alhaji Abdulrahman as the party’s Acting National Chairman.

Further, the NEC directed the PDP’s legal team to initiate constitutional processes aimed at reclaiming the seats of elected officials who defected from the party, citing Sections 68(1)(g) and 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution.

The committee also announced a nationwide reconciliation effort and membership audit ahead of the 2027 elections to rebuild trust while maintaining strict party discipline.

“The PDP draws its legitimacy from strict adherence to both our Constitution and that of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the communique stated.

“With unity, discipline, and renewed purpose, we will restore public confidence and rebuild a stronger party ahead of the next electoral cycle.”

AFRIPOST reports that this unprecedented shake-up shows deepening internal divisions within the PDP, highlighting the growing influence of Wike’s faction and raising questions about the party’s direction as the 2027 elections approach.
