Primate Rufus Ositelu, head of The Church of the Lord (Aladura) Worldwide, has dismissed claims that U.S. President Donald Trump intended to attack Nigeria.
He spoke at the centenary press conference of the church in Lagos.
Ositelu said Trump’s remarks, widely misinterpreted, were offers of support to fight terrorist cells in Nigeria, not threats of invasion.
“Trump was not talking about invading Nigeria. He was offering support to eliminate terrorist cells. The U.S. doesn’t need to enter Nigeria physically to do that,” he said.
He warned that attention on Trump’s statements has overshadowed the real problem: the persistent attacks on Christian communities in Northern Nigeria.
He described the violence as meeting the international definition of genocide.
“The real issue is the genocidal attacks happening in Northern Nigeria. Instead of debating Trump’s intentions, the government should focus on ending the killings,” he added.
Ositelu noted that while Muslims also face extremist violence, Christians are specifically targeted.
He expressed concern over compromised security agencies and intelligence leaks that hinder military efforts.
He urged the government to act boldly and Nigerians to welcome international support without fear.
The centenary celebrations, themed “Manifestation Glory,” will run from November 17 to 24, featuring sermons, lectures, cultural events, and a thanksgiving service.
