Ondo lawmakers move against Speaker, pass no-confidence vote

Must read

A bloc of twelve lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly has withdrawn confidence in the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, accusing him of actions they say amount to serious misconduct.

In a resolution dated November 13, the members alleged that the Speaker diverted N50 million meant for a public hearing and mishandled the Assembly’s monthly operational funds. They claimed the conduct violated key constitutional provisions meant to guide public officers.

The lawmakers referenced sections of the Fifth and Seventh Schedules of the 1999 Constitution, noting that the Speaker’s alleged actions contradict the rules against abuse of office and the obligations tied to the Oath of Office.

They further argued that the accusations fall under offences outlined in the ICPC Act and the Criminal Code, insisting the alleged financial infractions fit the definition of gross misconduct.

Acting under the powers provided in Section 92(4)(c) of the Constitution, the members said they had no choice but to pass a vote of no confidence and call for an EFCC probe to determine criminal liability and recover public funds if misused.

Signatories to the resolution include Hon. Jide Oguntodu, Hon. Temitope Akomolafe, Hon. Fatai Atere, Hon. Toyin Japhet, Hon. Raymond Daodu, Hon. Samuel Ifabiyi, and six other lawmakers representing various constituencies.
