A welcoming gathering for Defence Minister Bello Matawalle in Gusau turned tragic after a sudden crowd surge claimed a life and left several others wounded, stirring fresh concerns about safety at political events.
The incident unfolded on Thursday when a large number of supporters converged on the minister’s residence.
What began as a celebratory moment quickly spiralled into chaos as the crowd pressed forward, triggering a stampede that overwhelmed those closest to the entrance.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the casualty, noting that 23-year-old Khalifa Uzairu was brought lifeless to Farida General Hospital.
“The crowd lost control within seconds, and the situation became dangerous before anyone could intervene,” he told reporters, expressing worry over the increasing frequency of such incidents.
Five additional victims, identified as Ayuba Sani, Muhammadu Adams, Aliyu Aminu, Shaaban Hamisu and Inusa Musa Shehu, were rushed to the same hospital for urgent treatment.
Medical personnel described their conditions as stable, though some sustained fractures and severe bruises.
Moreover, security operatives have intensified patrols around the minister’s residence to forestall further unrest.
According to one officer who requested anonymity, authorities are “reviewing the triggers of the crowd movement and assessing whether negligence played any role.”

A senior government aide urged residents to prioritise safety during public gatherings, stressing that cooperation with security protocols remains essential.
