The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that some politicians are sponsoring armed thugs to disrupt the planned homecoming of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Speaking at a press briefing in Gusau on Wednesday, the APC Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, claimed that intelligence reports revealed a plot to attack the minister’s convoy and instigate chaos along the Gusau–Maradun route.
“We’ve uncovered a destructive plan to ambush the minister’s convoy and cause unrest during his visit,” Idris said.
“Those behind this scheme want to divert attention from the purpose of the minister’s homecoming.”
According to Idris, the APC had already made detailed arrangements to receive Matawalle, who is scheduled to meet with party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters in both Gusau and Maradun.
He noted that the visit was intended to strengthen party unity and reaffirm the minister’s connection with his political base.
He urged party supporters to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that the APC would not tolerate any form of violence.
“Our members must not carry weapons or engage in confrontations. We are a disciplined party that believes in peace,” he cautioned.
The party also appealed to security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order during the minister’s visit.
Idris emphasised that anyone found attempting to foment trouble should be arrested and prosecuted.
“Security operatives should take this intelligence seriously. We call for increased patrols along major routes to ensure the safety of the minister and all participants,” he added.
The minister’s visit, scheduled for Thursday, is expected to attract a large crowd of supporters from across Zamfara State.
The APC, however, maintained that it was confident the event would proceed peacefully under tight security surveillance.
