Tragedy struck on Wednesday when suspected armed robbers ambushed a joint security patrol team along the Idadu–Agbashi road in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, killing three officers on duty.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of the day, left a police inspector and two local vigilante members dead.
Also, the victims have been identified as Inspector Christopher Enoh, Mathew John, and Augustine Yusuf, all residents of Agbashi town.
According to eyewitness accounts, the patrol team had been conducting a routine security operation in the area when the assailants suddenly opened fire from a concealed position.
The unexpected attack resulted in the immediate death of the three officers before any backup could arrive.
A source familiar with the incident disclosed that the attackers fled with an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition belonging to the late inspector.
“It was a well-coordinated ambush. They shot without warning and escaped through the nearby forest after seizing the weapon,” the source revealed.
The remains of the deceased have since been deposited at the Agbashi General Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, security authorities in the state have reportedly launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen weapon.
A senior police officer who confirmed the incident said an intensive search was already underway.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in tracking down those responsible for this brutal attack,” the officer stated.
“Our men are combing the surrounding areas, and we have increased patrols along major routes in Doma to prevent further assaults.”
The incident has heightened tension in the community, with residents calling on the government to strengthen security presence along the Idadu–Agbashi axis, which has witnessed several attacks in recent months.
As investigations continue, authorities have assured residents that justice will be served and that the killers of the slain officers will be brought to book.
