Wike, Naval Officer Clash: We’ll protect officers on lawful duty – Defence Minister

Must read

Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reaffirmed that the Federal Government and the Military High Command will continue to protect every military officer carrying out lawful duties across the country.

Badaru gave the assurance on Wednesday while responding to questions from defence correspondents during a press conference on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration held at the National Defence College, Abuja.

His remark followed Tuesday’s confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, over a disputed piece of land in Abuja allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (rtd).

The Defence Minister said, “Well, at the Ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty.

“So we are looking into this issue, and we assure that any officer on lawful duty will be protected highly, so we will not allow anything to happen to him so far he is doing his job, and he’s doing his job greatly well.”

Badaru, however, maintained that the ministry was committed to ensuring discipline within the ranks while upholding fairness and professionalism in the handling of the matter.
