The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has directed tanker drivers, limousine operators, commercial bus parks, and other unauthorised businesses operating along the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) road in Lagos to vacate the area immediately.
The agency warned that full enforcement would soon begin against those who fail to comply with the directive.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, issued the warning during a media briefing at the authority’s headquarters in Lagos as part of activities marking the 2025 FAAN Safety Week.
Kuku expressed concern that despite several warnings, formal notices, and direct engagements, many illegal operators had continued to occupy the airport corridor, describing their activities as unsafe and harmful to both aviation operations and the environment.
“We have major encroachers along the airport road, tanker drivers, limousine operators, and commercial bus drivers, who have been repeatedly advised to vacate those locations. Their continued presence poses serious safety and environmental risks,” she stated.
The FAAN boss explained that apart from obstructing vehicular movement and violating safety standards, the illegal activities had worsened pollution and poor sanitation around the airport axis.
She said the authority recently carried out a detailed environmental and sanitation assessment to identify all encroachers in preparation for a clearance exercise.
“We have worked closely with the Lagos State Government and federal security agencies to ensure full compliance. The area will be cleared soon, as relocation is now inevitable,” Kuku warned.
Kuku further observed that poor sanitation around airports, particularly in Lagos and Abuja, attracts birds and wildlife, thereby heightening the risk of bird strikes, a major threat to flight safety.
She assured that FAAN would continue to engage with neighbouring communities, regulators, and stakeholders to maintain a safe and environmentally compliant airport environment.
Emphasising the need for sustainable solutions, Kuku called for stronger collaboration among lawmakers, regulators, airline operators, and service providers to uphold safety and environmental standards across the aviation sector.
