President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian journalists to exercise their right to critique government policies, stressing that such criticism must be grounded in fairness and a commitment to national progress.
Speaking at the All Nigerian Editors Conference in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the indispensable role of the media in shaping public opinion and sustaining democratic values.
“Journalists are the backbone of our democracy. Report boldly, but always with truth and integrity,” he stated.
The President warned against using media influence to undermine national development, urging reporters to see themselves as partners in nation-building.
“Critique policies with insight and fairness. The goal is not to destroy, but to contribute to a stronger and more united Nigeria,” Tinubu added.
Highlighting the impact of social media on journalism, Tinubu acknowledged its role in expanding citizen engagement while cautioning against its potential to spread misinformation rapidly.
“Every citizen can now be a publisher. This empowers people, but it also accelerates the spread of falsehoods,” he noted.
He urged media professionals to reinforce their editorial responsibilities, prioritizing verification, balance, and professional judgment.
“Truth must not be drowned out by speed. Let verification be your anchor, balance your guiding principle, and sound judgment your compass,” Tinubu advised.
The President’s remarks underscore a renewed call for responsible journalism, balancing freedom of expression with the duty to foster societal cohesion and informed public discourse.
