The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has trained 531 special marshals to strengthen road safety operations during the ember months and yuletide season across the state.
Speaking at the workshop held on Monday in Akure, the State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, said the exercise was aimed at reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on highways during the busy festive period.
AFRIPOST reports that the workshop, themed “Enhancing Security and Safety Strategies for Special Marshals’ Operations,” was part of the corps’ annual capacity-building initiative to enhance the competence and discipline of special marshals.
Ibitoye noted that the training was critical in ensuring that marshals are well-equipped to perform their duties effectively, adding that their contribution remains essential to maintaining sanity on the nation’s roads.
“You can’t give what you don’t have, so this training is important for special marshals to know what to do and do it better.
“We want to reduce death, injuries and occurrence of road crashes on highways this ember months.
“So we want everyone, including special marshals, to come onboard, assist us to get Nigerians into the fold in ensuring that safety is everybody’s business and not only FRSC,” he said.
He also urged participants to remain active in advocacy, enforcement, and promoting the image of the FRSC through their activities across the state.
In his remarks, the State Coordinator of Special Marshals, Mr. Oladeji Adebayo, commended the FRSC for the initiative, saying the workshop would sharpen the marshals’ skills and renew their dedication to road safety campaigns.
“Together, let us strengthen our strategies to protect lives and properties because our dedication to road safety and security is invaluable.
“But, our personal safety should and must not be compromised under any guise, because we are enjoined to take responsibility for our safety first before any other assignment,” he said.
Declaring the workshop open, Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), lauded the FRSC for its proactive measures in curbing road accidents and promoting public safety.
Ajulo, who was represented by Barr. Ajibade Bamisile, assured that the state government would continue to support FRSC’s road safety campaigns and capacity-building initiatives.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Oluyemi Ibiloye, and the State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Nanzing Sallah.
