Governor Charles Soludo is on course to secure a second term in office after sweeping all 21 local government areas in the Anambra State governorship election held on Saturday.
As of press time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced results from all local governments at its headquarters in Awka but was still collating the final figures before making a formal declaration.
To emerge winner, a candidate is required to score the highest number of votes and secure at least 25 per cent of votes cast in no fewer than two-thirds of the state’s 21 local government areas.
A review of the results officially declared by INEC shows that by recording victory in all the local councils, Soludo has comfortably met the constitutional threshold and is set to be declared winner.
Soludo, who was first elected about four years ago, will complete his initial term next March. His latest victory means he will be sworn in for a second and final term as governor.
For the 2025 poll, Soludo faced competition from Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP), and 13 other candidates.
A total of 16 political parties participated in the election, which was generally peaceful across the state, though concerns were raised about vote-buying.
YIAGA Africa, a civil society group observing the election, estimated voter turnout to be between 20.28 per cent and 22.92 per cent.
