The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has disclosed that it successfully rescued and rehabilitated 221 victims of human trafficking in Jigawa State within the last two years.
The revelation came during a one-day sensitisation campaign against human trafficking held in Kazaure, where the agency emphasised its growing efforts to combat the menace through community engagement and strategic partnerships.
According to the NAPTIP Commander in Jigawa, Abdulladir Turajo, the victims were rescued and reunited with their families following the establishment of the state command in July 2023.
He noted that since then, the agency has not only secured two convictions but has also conducted more than 170 awareness programmes across communities, schools, places of worship, markets, and transport hubs in the state.
“The fight against human trafficking requires everyone’s involvement. Our command has worked tirelessly to ensure that victims are rescued, rehabilitated, and reintegrated into society,” Turajo said.
“We also aim to build stronger collaboration with residents for effective intelligence sharing and timely reporting of trafficking incidents.”
The sensitisation programme, organised in partnership with the Jigawa State Ministry for Local Government and Community Development, marks the first phase of a broader statewide campaign. It is designed to reach all 27 local government areas across three zones in the state.
The first phase, which took place in Kazaure, targeted 12 local government areas in Jigawa North-West.
The second phase is scheduled for Hadejia to cover eight LGAs in the North-East, while the final phase will be held in Dutse for the seven LGAs of the South-West zone.
Turajo explained that Jigawa’s strategic position as a major international route and recruitment point for human trafficking makes the campaign crucial.
He added that the programme would help raise awareness about the dangers of trafficking and strengthen the capacity of local communities to detect and report such activities.
He further appreciated the Jigawa State Ministry for Local Government for sponsoring the initiative and lauded Governor Umar Namadi for his continued support in strengthening the fight against human trafficking.
“Our success so far wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the state government and our local partners.
“This campaign represents a new phase in our collective effort to protect vulnerable citizens and dismantle trafficking networks,” the commander added.
The awareness drive, according to NAPTIP, will continue in the coming months as part of a long-term strategy to reduce the incidence of human trafficking and exploitation across Jigawa State.
