The Yobe State Police Command has arrested eleven teenagers for allegedly gathering unlawfully and being in possession of substances believed to be banned liquid drugs.
In a statement issued in Damaturu, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the development, noting that the suspects, all below 16 years of age, were apprehended during a police raid in the Pawari Forestry area.
According to Abdulkarim, officers from the ‘A’ Division Headquarters carried out an intelligence-led operation targeting a notorious black spot known for criminal activity and drug use.
“During the operation, our men intercepted a group of minors engaged in an illegal assembly. Items suspected to be harmful liquid substances were recovered from the scene,” he said.
He further disclosed that initial investigations revealed the suspects confessed to participating in petty crimes, including pickpocketing and the theft of mobile phones in crowded public areas.
“These young individuals admitted to stealing phones and other valuables, especially in markets and public gatherings,” Abdulkarim stated.
The police spokesperson also assured that the command is working to identify and reach out to the parents and guardians of the minors.
He emphasised that the case highlights a growing concern over youth involvement in crime and substance abuse in the region.
“We are making every effort to trace their families and ensure proper guidance for the children,” he added, urging parents to closely monitor their wards to prevent them from being influenced by negative peer groups.
The suspects, he noted, will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action once investigations are concluded.
