A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student, Nwankwo Chukwuebuka Chrisantus, popularly known as DJ Brownlex, who was reportedly on his way to attend Afrobeats superstar Davido’s concert in Enugu.
The 300-level student of the Department of Economics and Political Science was travelling with some classmates when their vehicle rammed into a stationary truck along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway on Saturday night.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle’s driver lost control while trying to avoid a pothole, resulting in a fatal collision. Both Brownlex and the driver died instantly, while two others, identified as Okezie Ikesianachi and Arinze Emmanuel, sustained severe injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
Hospital sources confirmed on Sunday that the injured students are in critical but stable condition and are receiving intensive medical care.
On campus, the news of Brownlex’s death sparked deep sorrow among students, especially those in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
He was well-known as a talented disc jockey and an energetic personality who often performed at departmental events.
“This is a painful blow to our department and the entire student community,” said Osim Philip, President of the National Economics Students’ Association (NESA).
“Brownlex was more than just a student; he was the life of every gathering. His passing has left a void we can’t easily fill.”
Confirming the incident, UNN’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, said the crash involved about ten students from the institution.
He noted that some of the injured victims were taken to Bishop Shanahan Hospital in Nsukka, where a few have since been discharged.
“The University community is deeply saddened by this unfortunate loss,” Egwu said.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and wish the injured students a full and speedy recovery.”
He added that the institution has reiterated its safety policies, advising students to avoid night travel and to seek approval from the Student Affairs Department before embarking on trips outside the campus.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for the late DJ Brownlex on social media, with fellow students and fans sharing memories of his performances and describing him as a “rising star gone too soon.”
The university management said a condolence register will be opened in his honour this week, as the campus community continues to mourn one of its most vibrant young talents.
