Gunmen have kidnapped the Deputy Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Samaila Bagudu, in his hometown, Bagudu, headquarters of Bagudu Local Government Area.
The assailants reportedly invaded the town late Friday night, shooting indiscriminately to scare residents before taking the lawmaker away.
Bagudu was said to have been abducted shortly after observing his evening prayers and was on his way home from the mosque when the gunmen struck.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Government, Ahmed Idris, confirmed the abduction on Saturday.
He said security agencies had been notified and that efforts were ongoing to rescue the lawmaker unhurt.
According to him, “Security operatives are on the trail of the abductors to ensure the safe release of the Deputy Speaker.”
As of press time, the state police command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
