Sowore vows to end ‘state-backed slavery’ in contract staffing

Must read

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the growing trend of contract staffing in Nigeria, describing it as “state-backed slavery.”

In a post on Thursday on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, sighted by AFRIPOST, Sowore said millions of Nigerians were being subjected to exploitation through contract employment arrangements that deny them basic job security, welfare benefits, and workplace dignity.

According to him, both corporate organisations and government agencies were guilty of using the contract staffing system to evade their responsibilities to workers, particularly in the banking sector.

He wrote: “One of our next major battles will be to end this state-backed slavery known as ‘Contract Staffing.’ Millions of Nigerians work full-time without job security, benefits, or dignity, while corporations and government agencies exploit ‘contract’ arrangements to escape responsibility, particularly in the banking sector. This system must end!”
