The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has disbursed more than ₦1 billion in compensation to families of officers who lost their lives or sustained injuries while on duty in the past two years.
Commandant General of the Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, disclosed this on Monday during an operational visit to the Ondo State Command in Akure.
He said the payment, which was determined by rank, formed part of the welfare and insurance packages approved by the Federal Government to support affected personnel and their families.
“So far, within the period of two years, government has paid over N1 billion to our staff as a result being involved in operational activities nationwide.
“Some we lost, some were injured to the extent that they had one or two of their limbs amputated.
“And in a bid to compensate them, government approved such funds for the personnel. We give such funds to the deceased next of kins and the personnel that survive.
“Even last month, we paid certain staff shot during operation and many of them are from northeast region.
“Some of them who had amputation of limbs either arms or legs, we bought limbs for them,” he said.
The NSCDC boss said most of the casualties recorded by the corps occurred during ambushes, but assured that new operational strategies had been developed to manage such situations more effectively.
“If you trace the antecedents of ambush worldwide, it always records some casualties.
“Though, we have developed other strategies on how to manage and when we find ourselves in ambush we know what to do,” he said.
Audi commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for their continued support and approval of the compensation funds, noting that it would serve as motivation for officers to continue discharging their duties diligently.
He revealed that he had visited 29 state commands to interact with personnel and address their concerns firsthand, adding that his visit to Ondo was also to boost morale following the loss of some officers in Bayelsa State.
“The visit is to encourage them not lose hope in providing security and safety to critical national assets and infrastructure,” he said.
Audi urged officers to remain committed and assured them that the government would continue to prioritize their welfare and entitlements.
