An Islamic scholar, Professor Mufutau Oloyede Abddulraman has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, state governors and others in positions of authorities to ensure that their policies translate into peoples welfare.
Abddulraman, who is a professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at University of Ibadan, said that reading out statistics is not enough.
The don made these assertions while addressing journalists at a retirement and 70th birthday programme organised in his honour by the University of Ibadan Muslim Community on Sunday.
At the event were the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja who was represented by the duo of Mogaji Muktar Adewale Gbadeyanka and President General of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) Chief Sulaimon Ajewole, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli (Oyo South), former Executive Secretary of Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) Professor Daud Noibi and the Chairman, Oyo State Fire Service, Hon Maroof Akinwande.
Others are the guest lecturer who is an Associate Professor in the department of Foreign Languages, Lagos State University, Ojo, Dr Saheed Olurotimi Timehin and the Special Guest of Honour, Seriki Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Rasheed Omookuorun among other dignitaries.
Abddulraman while addressing the journalists, noted that reading out statistics is not enough.
The Islamic scholar who is the outgoing Chief Imam of the institution, said that leaders at various levels of governments need to ensure that policies, the package and execution must have positive effects on the citizens.
He said that the leaders must ensure that their policies and programmes translate into peoples welfare.
He said that the welfare of the people should be the main priority of those in positions of authorities.
“We have to feel the effects of their policies. Reading out statistics is not enough, but it has to translate into the welfare of the people. It has to translate to the welfare of the people. That should be at the uppermost of the minds of the leaders.
“They need to ensure that policies, the package and execution have to positive effects on Nigerians. So, that is where people will know that they are doing something. But without that, statistics are just mere numbers.
“So, we thank them for the little that they are doing. We have been seen the effects in terms of youth empowerment, students loans, but they should continue on that line and do more of such things, so that people will have better life to live. We thank Allah for them.
“The leadership of the current dispensation seems to be listening to people’s cry. I want to believe that they will continue to do the same. Because they cannot do it all”.
Timehin, in his lecture described the honoree as a distinguished scholar, preacher and mentor.
He noted that the honoree represents the best one can think of as an erudite scholar, preacher and teacher.
