Lamido declares bid for PDP national chairmanship

Must read

Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido, has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.

Lamido made the announcement on Monday through a post on his verified Facebook page, stating that he would visit the PDP’s national secretariat in Abuja to obtain his nomination form.

According to him, the move marks his renewed commitment to repositioning the PDP ahead of future elections.

“By God’s grace, I will be at Wadata Plaza today to pick up my nomination form for the office of National Chairman. It’s time to rebuild and restore the PDP to its rightful place in Nigerian politics,” he wrote.

The former Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized that his aspiration stems from his desire to strengthen internal democracy and foster unity within the party.

He expressed confidence that under his leadership, the PDP could regain its footing as a formidable political force.

“My passion for democracy and my dedication to the PDP’s founding ideals remain unwavering,” Lamido said.

“We must return the party to the people, restore faith in our internal processes, and prepare for victory in future elections.”

Lamido, who governed Jigawa State between 2007 and 2015, has long been known as one of the party’s most vocal advocates for reform and inclusiveness.

His declaration adds momentum to the growing race for the PDP chairmanship, as the opposition party prepares for its upcoming national convention.

The PDP, which led Nigeria from 1999 until 2015, is expected to elect a new National Chairman to steer its affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers believe Lamido’s entry into the race could inject experience and renewed energy into the party’s leadership contest.

“Lamido represents the old guard of the PDP with deep institutional knowledge. His candidacy may help bridge the gap between the party’s past and its future,” a source within the party said.

As the PDP prepares for its convention, Lamido’s campaign message of restoration and unity is expected to resonate with delegates seeking stability and vision within the party’s ranks.
